Is this Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy or Something else?

You cut dairy. Things improved, then they didn’t. Cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) is one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in early life — and one of the most guessed at.

Sound familiar?

You’ve been here before.

  • Blood or mucus in the stool
  • Eczema, reflux, and crying together
  • Poor weight gain, or feeding refusal
  • Told to cut dairy with no further guidance and no follow-up
What’s often underneath

Not all milk reactions look the same.

The delayed kind

Symptoms show up hours or days later — blood in the stool, reflux, eczema. Standard allergy testing comes back negative, which is why it’s so often missed.

The immediate kind

Hives, swelling, or vomiting right after milk. A true allergic reaction, and a different condition from the delayed kind — it needs a different plan.

Incomplete elimination

Dairy hides in far more products than families are told, which quietly undoes an otherwise good plan.

Soy sensitivity, too

Some babies who react to milk protein react to soy protein as well. Missing this can quietly undo an elimination trial.

Skin and gut overlap

CMPA is a common, under-recognized driver behind eczema and reflux that won’t settle.

Nutrition, for both of you

A breastfeeding parent on elimination needs support too — this gets skipped more often than it should.

How I work on it

Find the driver. Then treat it.

A board-certified pediatrician with the time to look properly — working alongside your child’s regular care, not replacing it.

  • 1Establish which type it actually is — the management diverges sharply.
  • 2Proper maternal elimination guidance with nutritional support for you, not just the baby.
  • 3The right specialized formula when needed — broken down enough for your baby’s gut to tolerate, chosen for how severe the reaction is.
  • 4The milk ladder — a structured reintroduction protocol so your child gets back to a normal diet at the right time.
  • 5Growth monitoring throughout.
Often connected

CMPA rarely shows up alone.

Skin, gut, and feeding are closely linked in infancy. If your child has more than one of these, they’re likely related.
