Dr. Irissa Rosario, MD
A mother of six first, and a pediatrician board-certified in both general pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine. I created Lumira Pediatrics for families who want more time, a more thoughtful approach, and a clearer plan for their child’s care.
Before I changed how I practice, I lived it as a mother.
My path to this work began at home. My son Mateo arrived early and spent his first days in the NICU — my first lesson, as a mother, in how it feels to sit on the other side of the care.
As he grew, he struggled with eczema that didn’t respond the way the textbooks promised. Chasing one flare after another wasn’t working, and I found myself thinking outside the box — stepping back to look at the whole picture instead of only the skin. That functional, root-cause way of seeing him is what finally began to help, and it changed how I understood my own field.
Parenting children with autism deepened it further. I’ve seen how profoundly the condition shapes not just a child but an entire family — and I learned, up close, how much diet, nutrition, sleep, and time outside can change a child’s behavior and well-being. These weren’t abstract ideas from a lecture. They were the difference in our own home.
“I have been on both sides of the exam room — as the physician, and as the mother trying to understand what her child needs.”
Dr. Irissa RosarioModern medicine and deeper roots.
My medical training gave me a strong foundation in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood illness. My family history gave me another way of understanding health.
As a woman of Gullah ancestry, I grew up with stories and practices shaped by herbal knowledge, midwifery, prayer, mindfulness, community care, and respect for the body’s natural rhythms. Continued study in traditional and Indigenous healing helped me see more clearly how these ways of knowing can sit alongside modern pediatric medicine.
I don’t see these as competing worlds. I draw from both with care, discernment, and respect for each child’s individual needs.
I wanted to give other families the care I went looking for.
After years of caring for children in hospitals and clinics — and after everything I learned as a mother — I began to imagine a different kind of practice: one where visits could unfold without rushing, parents could bring the whole story, and we could look at all the factors shaping a child’s health.
I created Lumira Pediatrics to do exactly that — unhurried, practical, holistic care, with the time to dive deep into the concerns that keep coming back. Whether I’m caring for a newborn, supporting a healthy child through the everyday seasons of growing up, or helping a family understand symptoms that won’t resolve, my goal is the same: to listen carefully, think deeply, and build a plan that feels clear and manageable.
Thoughtful care, without the clinical conveyor belt.
This isn’t about criticizing traditional pediatric practices. It’s about building a model with enough room for careful listening, broader thinking, and follow-up that lets the plan evolve.
Time for the whole story
Longer visits create space for questions, patterns, family context, and the details that are hard to fit into a brief appointment.
A deeper clinical lens
Depending on the concern, we may look at the gut, immune system, skin barrier, nutrition, sleep, environment, and sources of inflammation.
A practical plan
Shared decision-making, natural support when appropriate, conventional care when needed, and follow-up that lets the plan change with your child.
Hospital-trained rigor, layered with functional and integrative medicine.
Alongside that personal path, my years as a hospitalist gave me a deep foundation in complex medical cases. Caring for some of the most complex and critically ill children demands rigor, careful problem-solving, and steady clinical judgment — you learn to think several steps deep, question the easy answer, and keep looking until the picture makes sense.
When I layer that clinical depth with functional and integrative medicine — treating each child as an individual and asking why symptoms keep returning — it broadens how much I can help. The rigor of modern medicine and a wider, root-cause lens, working together for your family.
You don’t have to know exactly which service you need.
Tell me what’s happening, what you’ve tried, and what you’re hoping for. We’ll decide together whether Lumira is the right next step for your family.
