The child who catches everything

One illness ends and the next begins. Some of that is normal immune development — and some of it is a pattern nobody has stopped to look at.

Sound familiar?

You’ve stopped counting.

  • Back-to-back colds that never fully clear
  • Ear infections that return within weeks of finishing antibiotics
  • Congestion, mouth breathing, and a cough that outlasts every illness
  • Three rounds of antibiotics since fall — and it’s only January
  • You’ve been told “it’s daycare” for the third visit in a row
What’s often underneath

Frequent illness is a signal, not a diagnosis.

Allergy wearing an infection’s clothes

Chronic nasal inflammation looks remarkably like one cold after another. It’s treated as infection for years before anyone questions it.

Adenoids and tonsils

Enlarged tissue traps fluid, blocks drainage, and keeps the same infections cycling. Often the missing piece in recurrent ear disease.

Iron and vitamin D status

Both shape how a child’s immune system responds and recovers. Both are measurable, common, and correctable.

The antibiotic loop

Repeated courses reshape the gut microbiome, which shapes immune function, which leads to the next course. The loop has to be broken somewhere.

Sleep and breathing

Snoring, restless nights, and mouth breathing aren’t cosmetic. Fragmented sleep measurably impairs immune recovery.

When it isn’t just exposure

Recurrent pneumonia, infections needing IV treatment, poor weight gain, or stalled growth are a different conversation — and worth having early.

How I work on it

Sort the normal from the pattern.

A board-certified pediatrician with the time to look properly — working alongside your child’s regular care, not replacing it.

  • 1A real timeline — every illness, every antibiotic, what helped and what didn’t.
  • 2A careful exam of ears, airway, tonsils and adenoids, lungs, and the growth curve.
  • 3Targeted testing when it will change the plan, not testing for its own sake.
  • 4Work the drivers that are actually modifiable — allergy, nutrition, sleep, environment.
  • 5Referral to ENT, allergy, or immunology when the pattern calls for it.
Often connected

It rarely travels alone.

Skin, airway, and gut are one immune system. If your child has more than one of these, they’re likely related.

Functional medicine consults are cash-pay and do not replace your child’s primary care or specialist team. This page is educational and is not individual medical advice. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, dehydration, fever in an infant under two months, or a child who is unusually difficult to wake.
